Short_standard_arm Maintenance and Operations

There are approximately 4,301 streetlights in the City of Pittsburg. Approximately 2,070 of these streetlights are owned and maintained by Pacific Gas & Electric Co. (PG&E). The other 2,231 streetlights are owned and maintained by the City of Pittsburg. All streetlights on older wooden (joint) utility poles are the responsibility of PG&E. All decorative streetlight poles located in the downtown/marina area and the Railroad Avenue corridor are the responsibility of the City of Pittsburg to maintain. Standard stand-alone galvanized streetlight poles are partially maintained by the City and partially by PG&E.

If you observe a streetlight functioning poorly (flickering, off one day and on the next) this is a sign that the light bulb is near failure. You can report streetlight flickerings, outages or streetlights burning during the daytime to either the City of Pittsburg Public Works Department at (925) 252-4936, or PG&E at (800) 743-5002. In addition, you can report streetlight outages through the PG&E website at the following link:

Streetlight upgrades

In addition to maintaining streetlights, the City’s Public Works Department, through the Neighborhood Improvement Program, is also working with neighborhoods to install upgraded lights or additional lights at problem locations and improve lighting in older neighborhoods.

City of Pittsburg Upgrades Include:
The coordination of the street tree pruning & removal to eliminate trees blocking existing lights.
Installing higher wattage/brighter streetlights at existing locations
Installing longer mast arms so existing streetlights can clear obstacles and street trees that cause shadows at night.
Installation of streetlight shields in areas where streetlights are repeatedly out of service due to damage and vandalism.
Limited installation of additional new street lights within funding limitations
