A Self-Guided Tour

Public art has enhanced and beautified the City since the 1970’s; however in the 1990’s numerous pieces of art began to emerge. The following is a tour of the major public art to be found in this small area of Old Town Pittsburg between Third and Fifth Streets.

The water fountain and porticos on the two opposing corners of this intersection set the theme for Old Town as a place to gather and rest with its many plazas and benches all within the two block area of the Art Walk. 

The Ore Cart monument is a tribute to Black Diamond and the miners who extracted the coal from the Mt. Diablo foothills from 1860 to 1911.

The Steelworker in Pittsburg, 1993
The steelworks and those who labored in the mill played a major role in the history of our community.   This statue by Sculptor Frank Vitale captures the essence of the era.

Wander through the Farmers Market, shop for fresh produce, stop along the way to enjoy lunch at one of the local restaurants or market food vendors, then continue exploring the area.

One of the best kept secrets in Old Town Pittsburg is the site for Cinema under the Stars, an outdoor movie theater. It is also the home of two magnificent pieces by resident artist Francis Palermo and sculptor Jason Griego.

The California Theater
In addition to being one of the last historic art deco theaters in the area, the façade of the building contains a number of sculptures representing the muses of the arts.

During art walk artists of all ages from around the Bay Area will gather to work, display and sell their artwork

Muniz Plaza
After enjoying a hearty lunch at one of the local restaurants it’s time to rest in a cool area before completing the art walk.

The Fisherman
One of the City’s first Public Artworks was “The Fisherman” which honors the early Italian fishing community and is dedicated to Isola delle Femmine, the City's Sister City in Italy. Designed and created by local artist Frank Vitale.

The Yellow Boat
As a final tribute to the fishing industry the “Red Salmon” fishing boat symbolizes the humble beginnings of our small but mighty community.
