Applications are currently being accepted for vacancies on the Planning Commission, Community Advisory Commission and Youth Advisory Commission.

Applications received after the open application period will be held on file for a period of 12 months.

Commissions and Committees

If you have an interest in serving your community, applying to be a commissioner is a great place to start.  The City of Pittsburg has established four commissions to assist in recommending policy and help in the decision-making process to govern Pittsburg.

All commissioners must reside in the City of Pittsburg and serve as volunteers without compensation.

The following City commissions comprise seven members:  Planning Commission, Historic Resources Commission (meets in conjunction with and comprised of the Planning Commission), and Community Advisory Commission (CAC). The City’s Youth Advisory Commission is composed of a minimum of nine and a maximum of thirteen youth members and three youth alternates.  See the specifics under Youth Advisory Commission.

Selection Process for all Commissions

Commissioners are appointed by a majority vote of the City Council and serve staggered terms.  Commission recruitment occurs biennially in December through the City Clerk’s office.  The process begins with advertising for vacancies the City Council interviewing applicants utilizing multiple types of advertising, the media, and networking opportunities to present qualified candidates to the City Council for consideration and interview.

The interview and selection of candidates is an open process.  The City Council reviews the applications and interviews take place in February.  At the next regularly scheduled meeting, the City Council votes to appoint the most qualified applicants to fill the vacant seats.  Interviews take place in February and appointments are made at the next regular meeting after interviews.

Attendance, Unscheduled Vacancy and Resignation

If an unscheduled vacancy occurs on a commission, the City Council either appoints from the pool of applicants on file (the eligibility list) or opens up the position to new applications where the above process is followed.

The City Council receives an attendance report for all commissioners and may remove a commissioner for excessive absences.  Commissioners who are unable to continue their service, for whatever reason, should submit a formal letter of resignation to the City Council through the City Clerk’s Office.  A commission member may be removed from office at any time by majority vote of the City Council.
