Abandoned Shopping Cart

The City passed a Shopping Cart Regulation Ordinance to prevent abandoned carts from ending in our streets and neighborhoods. This is an effort to prevent safety hazards and visual blight created by abandoned carts. Residents can assist the City by reporting abandoned carts.

Hazards
Abandoned carts interfere with pedestrian and vehicular traffic and create many other potential hazards. You can help the City by reporting the location of abandoned carts. To report abandoned carts on the street or sidewalk, contact the City of Pittsburg Public Works Department at 925-252-4936.

Abandoned shopping carts can be also be reported on Go Request on the City’s website or on your mobile devise after downloading the Go Request app. Abandoned shopping carts is under the Streets category in the Go Request application.

Prevention
The Shopping Cart Ordinance, Pittsburg Municipal Code 10.59, was developed to ensure that the owners of carts are aware of their responsibility to prevent the abandonment of carts and to educate their customers not to take the carts and abandon them off-site. Each business must submit a site-specific Prevention Shopping Cart Removal Plan to the City of Pittsburg. This plan focuses on loss prevention and requires a retrieval plan and employee awareness training as plan components. It further requires that the owner provide outreach to their customers to prevent loss of the carts. In addition, an annual report is required by July 1st of each year.
