PITTSBURG — City leaders here upheld a Planning Commission decision to extend hours of operation at the Pittsburg Elks Lodge, allowing the fraternal group additional time for alcohol service and music on weekends.
The Elks Lodge No. 1474 at 200 Marina Blvd. will be allowed to stay open on Friday and Saturday nights until 1 a.m., though music must stop by 11:30 p.m. and alcohol sales a half-hour later. The decision included provisions from the Planning Commission requiring doors in the back of the building remain closed during events and have alarms.
The 3-1 vote came despite continued opposition from residents near the lodge and city staff recommending denial of the new use permit because of ongoing noise complaints and additional strain on police patrols. Council members said the lodge had generated fewer calls to police for noise since 2007.
The Elks have to amend their license with the state's Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control before implementing the new hours.
The Elks wanted hours similar to Pittsburg Yacht Club and Mehran restaurant so that they would be a viable choice for banquets.
Councilman Will Casey recused himself from voting because he is an Elks member, and Vice Mayor Michael Kee cast the lone dissenting vote.
