Program Summary & Goals

Underutilized, potentially contaminated properties are known as “brownfields.” The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Brownfields Program is designed to empower communities to work together to prevent, assess, safely clean up, and sustainably reuse brownfields. The City of Pittsburg was awarded $300,000 in EPA funding for Community-wide Assessment in 2017 and a $800,000 Multipurpose Grant in 2019. In June, 2023 the City entered into an agreement with the CA Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC) to conduct remediation of four City-owned parcels on East 3rd Street with a $534,437 Equitable Communities Revitalization Grant.

Through these grants from the EPA and DTSC, the city will fund environmental assessments, clean-ups, community engagement, redevelopment planning, and more.
