Project Summary & Goals

Underutilized, potentially contaminated properties are known as “brownfields.” The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Brownfields Program is designed to empower communities to work together to prevent, assess, safely clean up, and sustainably reuse brownfields. The City of Pittsburg was awarded $300,000 in EPA funding for Community-wide Assessment in 2017 and a $800,000 Multipurpose Grant in 2019.  Through these grants from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the city will work with property owners throughout the City to fund property evaluations, clean-up, community engagement, redevelopment planning, and more.

*New* In June, 2023 the City entered into an agreement with the CA Department of Toxic Substances Control to conduct remediation of four City-owned parcels on East 3rd Street.  The DTSC awarded Pittsburg $534,437 and two years to conduct this work

Do you own underused or potentially contaminated property in Pittsburg? Great news!  Private property owners can benefit from the grant funding to support their property goals from sale to reuse and redevelopment.  These grants through the EPA are NOT for regulatory purposes. It is a no cost, no risk program that aims to spark improved use, economic development, and positive environmental practices by providing funding for the building blocks of redevelopment.   Use the contact information below to see how property owners and the City of Pittsburg can work together toward a better Pittsburg
