NEWS RELEASE

What will Pittsburg Look Like in Ten Years - Vibrant, Clean, and Healthy or the Opposite?

Help decide at the Climate Action workshop on Oct. 6th

Pittsburg, CA (September 21, 2010) - The City of Pittsburg and its Community Advisory Commission invite the community to an evening workshop on Wednesday, October 6th from 6:30 – 7:30 pm at City Hall. Attendees will hear about the Climate Action Plan that is in progress, and provide input through a survey and discussion. They will also receive a free CFL light bulb and reusable shopping bag. Those in the community that are unable to attend the workshop are encouraged to participate in the online version of the survey at www.ci.pittsburg.ca.us/climate.

The one hour workshop will begin with an introduction to global warming / climate change, and its local relevance to Pittsburg. For legal reasons mandated by the State, the Plan must focus on reducing “greenhouse gases” which climate scientists believe to be the cause of climate change. “But the plan promises much more than that for Pittsburg,” says Laura Wright, Administrative Officer at the City of Pittsburg. “The programs and projects in the Climate Action Plan will also help families and businesses lower their utility bills and saving on gas, and make Pittsburg a more convenient and safe community to live in.”

Even in the national economic downturn, many in Pittsburg notice significant improvements in the community. The City has already initiated and completed many “green” projects that benefit the community and the environment, including updated streetlights, new bicycle racks, and a better recycling system for residents. The Climate Action workshop will be an opportunity to learn more about recent and planned improvements. “It’s important to look ahead during tough times,” says Wright. “We have to envision a positive future and then chart our course to get there.”

RSVP is not required, but encouraged to ensure enough refreshments. Responses and questions may be directed to pwintern@ci.pittsburg.ca.us or 925-252-4129. For more information and to take the online survey, visit www.ci.pittsburg.ca.us/climate.
