The Pittsburg Library celebrates “Last Stop on Market Street” with a StoryWalk® and storytime on the bus

The Pittsburg Community Library is celebrating the book “Last Stop on Market Street” with three weeks of activities from May 1 through May 21. Family-friendly activities will include a StoryWalk® through downtown Pittsburg, a live storytime on a moving bus and a conversation with the award-winning illustrator.

In an effort to highlight some of the themes in the book, families are invited to take part in a city park cleanup, donate to a sock drive to help neighbors in need and learn about and observe the life cycle of the butterfly.

“Last Stop on Market Street” written by Matt de la Peña and illustrated by Christian Robinson is a 2016 Newbery Medal winner, winner of the 2016 Caldecott Honor and the 2016 Coretta Scott King Illustrator Honor as well as a New York Times bestseller.

The children’s book tells the story of CJ and his grandma who ride the bus across town every Sunday after church. During the bus ride, CJ asks his grandma why they don’t own a car, why he can’t have an iPod like other kids and how come they always have to get off in a rough part of town? CJ’s grandma helps him to see the beauty and fun in their routine.

Award–winning illustrator of the book, Christian Robinson, will be at the Farmers Market in historic downtown Pittsburg on May 21 at 10:30 a.m. He will read the book, demonstrate illustrations, sign books and take a ride on the bus with families from the library

Beginning on May 1, students can read the book as they walk through downtown Pittsburg. The pages of the book will be displayed in store fronts along Railroad Avenue between 6th and 8th streets from May 1-21. The StoryWalk® begins at Coats Barbershop and ends at the Railroad Book Depot.

Just like CJ in the book, library patrons can go for a ride on the bus through their community. Families are invited to take a ride with Tri Delta Transit on Wednesday, May 11 for live storytime and music.
