PITTSBURG, CA – On May 6, 2024, the Pittsburg City Council voted to adopt the City’s comprehensive general plan update, “Envision Pittsburg.”

The general plan functions as a blueprint for the City’s development, as well as its economic future, and sets forth goals and policies for everything from land use to traffic and bicycle/pedestrian infrastructure to resource conservation. “Envision Pittsburg” also was the subject of an extensive environmental review process, with the City Council certifying an environmental impact report.

“This is a document the City of Pittsburg can and should be proud of. This reflects the goals we, as a community, have held with the highest value: steady, thoughtful development; focusing on our infrastructure; and ensuring Pittsburg is the greatest place it can be for future generations,” says Pittsburg Mayor Juan Antonio Banales.

“We, as a community and a City, continue to push to make Pittsburg better for everyone. I believe my colleagues and I share an incredible amount of excitement for what the future of Pittsburg holds. ‘Envision Pittsburg’ projects that excitement!” adds Pittsburg Vice Mayor Jelani Killings.

California municipalities are required to maintain a general plan and undergo a comprehensive update every 20 years. Pittsburg’s last comprehensive update was in 2001. “A document of this magnitude and importance is not something we see every day. We take the responsibility of this action incredibly serious, and are humbled by the opportunity to be in the position to adopt this plan for our City’s future,” noted Councilmember Dionne Adams.

The plan, which commenced development in 2018, is the product of more than five and a half years of public outreach, workshops with the Pittsburg City Council and Planning Commission, and environmental review. Councilmember Angelica Lopez stressed the work of staff to bring this document forward. “I want to acknowledge the incredible work by our community and staff to get this before us today. Planning for the next year is a task in itself, and what we have done to set a course for the next two decades is incredible work,” says Lopez.

Councilmember Shanelle Scales-Preston reflected on the value the City Council placed on community input, and the response received. “To see the community become so involved in something as important as the ‘Envision’ plan is beautiful to experience. It shows the love and pride the residents of Pittsburg have for our community, which is something that continues to set us apart,” says Scales-Preston.
