FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

PITTSBURG, CA – The City of Pittsburg continues its efforts to enhance commercial areas throughout the City. The East Bay community’s latest effort allocated $100,000 toward a grant program targeting smaller commercial areas and independently owned businesses throughout the City with the goal of assisting with façade enhancements that will help beautify the streetscape and cultivate a more pleasant and enjoyable shopping and dining experience.

Pittsburg Mayor Juan Antonio Banales sees the program as another step in helping to establish Pittsburg as a destination, and contributing to the City’s larger economic development and job creation efforts. “We recognize that creating a sense of place within our shopping and dining districts is integral in making them attractive to both patrons and other businesses that could potentially locate in Pittsburg, adjacent to some of these areas,” says Banales. “We want anyone coming to our City to see what we know is there, the sense of pride in our community, its people, and its businesses.”

“We believe that helping to improve these areas indicates to site selectors and developers that Pittsburg is a place that is not only committed to maintaining our commercial areas, but also improving them when needed,” adds City Manager Garrett Evans.

Pittsburg’s Economic Development Manager Robert Carrera designed and launched the program following close discussions with the City’s Community and Economic Development Subcommittee. The purpose of the funds is specifically for the enhancement and beautification of public-facing building façades, and can be used for awnings, painting, signage, and architectural treatments, among other things. The City will be awarding grants worth up to $10,000 each.

Previously, the City has launched a pilot program dedicated to improving business signage throughout the Downtown Area, providing signs to more than 10 businesses. In 2020, following the COVID-induced shutdowns of many small businesses, the City provided grants of up to $10,000 to more than 20 local businesses.
