Contra Costa Cooling Resources for People Experiencing Homelessness

The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued an Excessive Heat Warning for the inland Bay Area for this Friday through Sunday, July 14-16. Please stay hydrated and limit strenuous activity. Use sunscreen if you’re going outdoors. Never leave kids or pets unattended in vehicles. Check on neighbors and older adults.

Locations in Contra Costa County to cool off:

County Employment & Human Services (EHSD) Locations 
On Friday, July 14, EHSD will have the following offices available for community members to cool off during regular business hours, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.:

Antioch         4545 Delta Fair

Brentwood   151 Sand Creek Road

 

Stay hydrated and follow tips to stay cool and safe during hot weather. Check on infants, children, the elderly, and pets.

Antioch
Antioch Community Center, 4703 Lone Tree Way
Nick Rodriguez Community Center: 213 F Street
Open Saturday July 15 & July 16 when temperatures reach over 102 degrees, 12 PM to 8 PM

Brentwood
Brentwood Community Center, 35 Oak Street
Open Saturday, July 15 and Sunday, July 16 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. 

TIPS TO PREVENT heat-related symptoms:

  • Drink water. Sip all day; do not wait until you are thirsty.
  • Do not leave children or pets in vehicles.
  • Limit physical activity and wear a hat outside, preferably with a wide brim.
  • Keep shades drawn, and blinds closed.
  • Open windows to cooling breezes in the evening.

CONSEJOS PARA PREVENIR los síntomas relacionados con el calor:

  • Beba agua. Beba todo el día; No espere hasta que tenga sed.
  • No deje niños o mascotas en vehículos.
  • Limite la actividad física y use un sombrero afuera, preferiblemente de ala ancha.
  • Mantenga las persianas bajadas y las persianas cerradas.
  • Abra las ventanas a la brisa refrescante por la noche.

Additional Information:

CORE Outreach 
CORE outreach will be bringing on additional teams this weekend to provide usual services including water distribution and general wellness checks (while of course keeping themselves as safe as possible!). 
·     To connect with a CORE mobile outreach team, call 211 and press 3 to connected to dispatch. 
·     CORE is not a crisis response service. If someone is experiencing a medical emergency, please call 911. 
 
Friday, 7/14:
·     All CORE teams will be alerted to place heatwave related clients into day/service centers or to be dispatched to provide emergency supplies as a top priority throughout the day. 
 
Saturday, 7/15: 
·     2 teams and 1 dispatcher are regularly scheduled 8AM-4PM (have increased capacity from typical 2 teams to the 3-4 teams). 
·     1 night team  
 
Sunday, 7/16:
·     1 team and 1 dispatcher 8AM-4PM are scheduled as usual. 
 
Emergency supplies:
·     Extra water, electrolyte packets, granola bars and similar snacks. 
 
Concord Service Center/Warming Center 
Friday 7/14 - Sunday 7/16
·     Increasing cots at Warming Center from 9 to 15 cots. 
·     Increasing capacity at Concord Service Center from 12 to 15 clients 
 
Emergency supplies: 
·     Extra water, electrolyte packets, granola bars and similar snacks. 
 
CARE Centers
Friday, 7/14
·     Richmond: GRIP at 165 22nd Street open 9 am - 3 pm
·     Walnut Creek: Trinity Center at 1888 Trinity Avenue will be open 9 am - 4 pm
 
Saturday, 7/15
·     Richmond: GRIP at 165 22nd Street open 8 am - 2 pm
·     Walnut Creek: Trinity Center is NOT open
 
Sunday, 7/16
·     Richmond: GRIP at 165 22nd Street open 8 am - 2 pm
